Hamilton trails Massa at Interlagos

Lewis Hamilton began the decisive Brazilian Grand Prix weekend by finishing second to title rival Felipe Massa in the first free practice session at Interlagos.

McLaren man Hamilton topped the timesheets until late in the hour and a half-long session after laying down a 1:12.495 with 50 minutes remaining, but local hero Massa beat it by 0.091 seconds a few minutes from the end.

Light rain had prevented anyone from approaching Hamilton's time until the final 10 minutes, with Massa improving bit by bit in his third spot behind Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Massa recorded his best of 1:12.305 with seven minutes left and Hamilton, returning to the tarmac for a last stint, was unable to find an answer, locking the brakes on his final flying lap.

Finn Raikkonen, who triumphed in the title race at the Sao Paolo circuit in 2007 despite Hamilton's seven-point lead over him heading into that last weekend, improved his time to 1:12.507 after the fall of the chequered flag - but remained third.

Behind him were Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber, Heikki Kovalainen of McLaren, Renault's Fernando Alonso, Red Bull's Mark Webber and Spaniard Alonso's team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr, like Massa competing at his home race.

This year it is Massa that is seven points behind Hamilton - who will become Formula One's youngest world champion at 23 if he finishes fifth or higher on Sunday - before the final grand prix.
